A Conversation with Oprah - the (American) White World

In conversation with Oprah Winfrey, Emmanuel explores the concept of the (American) White World. He states, "Just because the (American) world is white, doesn't mean your world has to be." As he answers one woman's question on how to be closer with Black friends.

So much hatred. Speak of hope. Millions dream of coming to this so-called racist nation for a better life. Some die trying to get here. Some send kids as young as 9 across Mexico to get here. People come from India, China, Korea, and elsewhere and thrive in the American dream. Brexit can happen. The door is open.

Living in southern Oregon there really are miles and miles of only white and latinx people. POC are highly noticeable because it is rare. When I have the chance I smile... but it would be really weird if I walked up to them and offered to be their friend. I would like to... but if somebody came at me like that I would be walking away quickly myself🤣 I get why she asked that. My best friend and her mixed race daughter moved back to the area years ago. Her beautiful daughter felt like she stuck out everywhere she went. She felt like she was on display... nobody in any store or on any street looked remotely like her. All we could do was have empathy... it was a helpless feeling. There were no neighborhoods to go to.

Oprah literally said that the old white people have to die off for there to be true change in race relations in this country. If you agree with that then you are a racist. If you believe critical race theory is an actual thing, then you are a racist. If you believe that regular white folks go about their day hoping to hold black people back as a regular thing, then you are a fool and a racist. If you inject race into every aspect of your life and conversations, well that makes you a racist. If you support what these 2 racist black people are saying, that makes you a racist.

Seriously?! If we've only grown up in a working class white suburb (of Detroit, in my case, but where doesn't matter), with only similar working class white kids around us, how are we supposed to approach others? I tried it a couple of times because it was important to me, but didn't have any success. It seemed weird to all concerned. (OK, I agree! "HEY (only) New Black Kid in my class! I want to be friends!" Serious and heartfelt coming from me. Probably perceived as stalker-ish from the receiving party!) Left the USA long time ago. Much easier to be friends with others in Europe.

I love these conversations you started and keep it up. However there is one thing BLACK PEOPLE IN USA have to aknowdlege too and start investing in Africa cause as the president of GHANA stated "Nana Akufo-Addo. :"The fate of all black people wherever they are in the world is linked to Africa. Until Africa is not respected, black people won't ." Until this is not a realty i m afraid we will continue this conversation over and over. Although i have faith that the future will definitely be better for my kids, still....I believe in ecomic power to eradicate the racism. TRUMP will never state to Cris CUOMO to go back to his country..but we know he said it to black US Citizen. Me too i started my own chanel to change the narrative. We Black people need to do more for Africa. We need to Invest in Africa! give back to our ancester land. Organyze trip paid by all big stars in USA so young black people can go to Africa and volonteer not only but sit with young kids and teach them social comunication, etc. Thing about having a conversation on this topic ...I' m sure we cna change the narrative as i said in my video. Let's change the narrative!!

But "the world" is NOT white. So-called "white people" make up less than 10% of the earth's population. You have to go out of your way to live in a "white world". You have to -- on purpose -- only socialize with, worship with, learn with, and exclusively live your life with "whites only" to make this statement true. It's easy to live a multi-racial and multi-cultural life, especially in America. What's hard, especially in America...is ridding oneself from a "white" mindset. It has infiltrated so many societies. Being set free from a "white" mindset makes one truly free indeed.

Then you can even convince yourself of something even when you are one of the richest and most powerful (deserved or not but that’s another story) women in the world (who also complains about sexism btw) and get away with saying that for racism and ‘oppression’ to end the old White men have to die.

My point is that white people need to take a stronger stance in solving the problem of racism, because black people can not do it on our own... we've tried. Another thing...why is it ok to judge an entire group of people by a few ( within their culture's actions). You would not want to be judge as a methamphetamine addicted, Trump loving, Confederate flag waving, trailer park living racist because of the white people who are. So please stop judging all black people by the those who live in the ghetto and indulge in hip/hop culture.

I teach at a school with 100% white children- not a single black, Asian, or Hispanic student. It’s not a question of the path of least resistance here- it’s a question of building a path when there isn’t one there. My question is how do we bring this conversation into an aging, conservative, nearly all white community that may not feel as though the topic of racism and black culture applies to them?

LOL My technical skills are a year late and a dollar short I need help. I absolutely love what you did and are doing both Emmanuel and Oprah. The challenges that held me back from doing anything on the idea was finding a co-host which I've been actively doing it least 2 years, technical skills, C- PTSD and prioritizing myself and my recovery first I'm trusting God with the timing. Giving myself away to save another was easy, I had done that my whole life. This is hard when there's so much suffering around us. So I do actually talk to people in person, my handicap is in the social media dept. I need a team, mentor or social media manager. The journey matters and were acceptable naked and needy, without nothing to prove then, or now. Value of every human life can't be changed by what they do or don't do.

I think she was looking for a much more practical answer than what he gave. I grew up in one of those areas and really had my eyes opened when I went to a larger college and starting meeting people from many different backgrounds, religions and ethnicities. Before that, I couldn't even comprehend what I didn't know or understand, and wouldn't have had a clue where to start to educate myself. She's a sell out and I'm no longer an ardent fan; I doubt i'll ever watch that racist women again in my life. How did she & all the many black millionaires get so much money if they're so damn underprivileged? MY family was the poor settlers who struggled on the Oregon trail, who came over in boats to a country that didn't like them (Irish). So quit all the belly aching!

Locke? Who's locke? Some Fijian guy? Trading? Are you saying the Mesopotamians dominate all of the current stock markets because it originated from them? Is western credibility in business, the one communicated by it's media on what a successful participant is, is that all Mesopotamian? What's that movie... Wolf of Mesopotamia? Japanese businessmen all dress in Mesopotamian garb when running important meetings with their western clients? You seeing why what you're presenting is silly? At least, if you're going to choose a point, you run through it first before you throw it at me. The fact that I even have to say this while you try to worm away from the understanding of the expressions of white culture is annoying af That you keep bringing up foreign and irrelevant examples to a particular instance of white culture in the multicultural country of America is annoying af YOu're not trying very hard to understand. You seem to be nitpicking, really, in order to avoid admitting that what I'm saying makes sense

@Troy Moses "i said what white culture was tho. many times now" I disagree. You've given examples, yet you haven't said what underlying ideas make it white until now. "the system of government and all that inspires and reinforces it" Ah. Government is white. I see. "the interactions within these systems. all of them." Language has existed longer than homo sapiens. But okay, let's play it your way. Language is white. "what language is used when talking to your boss or your employee? can you describe this as african? or italian?" English, Japanese, and they are European and Asian languages. "no. its white" This does not logically fit where you put it. Don't know what you mean. "how are company values expressed by the owners, its employees, the vendors, clients, etc" Company values are money and service. That's it. At any rate, are you implying having morals and values are white characteristics? Goddamn, *bruv,* you sound like Richard Spencer. I hope you reconsider this statement. "EVEN when they are of a different race, the white interactions have been learned. Learned and reinforced in a historically white system" Sharia compliant banking disagrees. "money is not a white construct. but the way it is used, the routes towards gaining or trading it, all these interactions ARE white culture" Tell that trading is white to the Chinese who built the Silk Road and the Mesopotamians who invented money. "The Mesopotamian shekel - the first known form of currency - emerged nearly 5,000 years ago. The earliest known mints date to 650 and 600 B.C. in Asia Minor, where the elites of Lydia and Ionia used stamped silver and gold coins to pay armies." "They're not black. They're not chinese. They're not jewish. They're not green. They are white. Western values are white values" Black people who believe in natural rights believe in Locke's values. Not Western values. Not white values. "i dont know how many times you want me to say this, man. this is where the gaslighting shit comes from" I'm not gaslighting, I'm attempting to understand your point of view.

@Troy Moses "I’m not pretending these are somehow non-racial and objective like you’d like. I name these as white systems. Because they are" ... already asked you a follow up question on the concept. "The language used to impose and enforce order, the organisational structures, the way that interactions play out between different elements of these broader areas of society, these positions of power have been white from the beginning." 1. Language was invented before humans existed. Social hierarchies existed before humans did. So no, language is not white. Hierarchy is not white. 2. That implies that the person in power is white. There are plenty of examples, and for the majority of human history, where nonwhites controlled most social interactions. 3. No. You're simply wrong. Have you been to a non-European majority country? Ever? Ever been to Mexico? Korea? China? Nigeria? "And minorities navigate this. You ask why is any of this is important? I’ve told you. You just stop reading. Minorities need to be heard, or they suffer in silence, or they protest (“riot”). Minorities are a part of these communities and countries. A part of society. A society that can serve them TOO with no extra effort." I've read, pondered, and responded to every goddamn sentence you've written in this thread. Find one sentence I've missed. Minorities navigate this, that is correct, but so do everyone. Just because a system has racist people in it does not make the system itself racist. I believe that is where our interpretations of the phrase differ. I think racism comes in all types, thus calling something a "white" system does not describe it in relevant terms. Does it discriminate against non whites? Or was it simply created by white people? As for your last few sentences, why do you conflate protesting and rioting? They're different. Minorities are part of these communities and countries. Correct. Society does serve minorities, particularly in the US. Affirmative action exists, as well. Are there things that could be improved? Of course! Nothing's perfect. I suppose, the most important question I have, is: is it no longer "white" when you get your way with the government?

@Troy Moses "BLM is a legitimate race question about the treatment of black people within a white society" I said it wasn't an example of "white culture" or "white systems," not that it wasn't legitimate. Stop putting words in my mouth. I don't do it to you, you shouldn't do it to me. Just like assuming who I am, assuming my opinions on certain political organizations isn't a good strategy to convince me of anything. Fortunately for you, I'm persistent in my discussions. I seek to understand. Best of all, I don't get insulted when people use ad hominem (which, to your credit, you haven't) or straw men. You're arguing with your assumption of me. It's a waste of time. Argue with and think about what I say, not what you think I mean. And if I say something silly, call me on it. I'll correct it. "You snidely quote “white”, but I mean it legitimately. The system of govt in America is a white system. This is seen in elements of this system; education, law and enforcement, finance, business, etc etc" Great! You've identified what. Now tell me why. Is money a white construct? Is law enforcement a white construct? Or are you arguing the system is not inherently racist, but people in law enforcement perform racist actions? If the latter, once again, your problem is not with the system, but with the application of the system. If 100% of government was made up of black Americans, would it still be a "white" system? Is the fact that Asians have a higher median income than whites in the US because of the "white" nature of business? Is that why Jewish men have 16% higher income than white men in the US? Systems that aren't explicitly racist are race-neutral. People, however, will never be 100% race neutral.

Amen... Mine and my husband's world has been flipped upside down in the best of all ways. 3yrs ago we opened our hearts and our minds to a couple of Nigerian LGBTQ young teens now in their 20s. We now are to sponsor them on a path to come here to the U.S.. Where we well work to build a family where they can be safe to be who they are. Never came into our minds that as 2 white gay men in SC, that this would be our life. The only thing is one must see past what makes each of us different, to what makes us each the same. Great blessing can be found if you only look for them.

@Troy Moses What commonly used expression, that the "world is white? I gotta say, I never head that common expression. Its farcical on its face. The only reason anyone would say such a thing is either to make fun of white people or assert that white people are racist. Let me be clear, then I will give you the last word. The world is not white. No one believes the world is white. To say the world is white is both untrue and foolish. Oprah acted like saying it was some pearl of wisdom and it was not.
